Defensible Space Assistance Days

Truckee Fire has been partnering with Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships (SWEP) and Tahoe Truckee Unified School District (TTUSD) to assist community members in need with their defensible space.

Residents in need are identified during inspection or recommended by a community member. Once qualification for needs based assistance is confirmed, we work with Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships (SWEP) and Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District (TTUSD) to put the project into action.

SWEP and Truckee Fire facilitate an in-classroom lesson educating students on fire science, wildfire prevention, defensible space, service learning, and the scope of the project they will be working on. The next day, students put their knowledge into action and work to improve the defensible space of the project location.

Since 2023, over 400 students have been educated on defensible space and forest health!

Defensible Space Assistance Days aren’t just about clearing vegetation—they’re about empowering students to become stewards of their community.

Beyond just the physical work completed, these experiences help instill a sense of responsibility and awareness in students. Many students take what they learn back home, starting conversations with their families about how to improve defensible space around their own homes.
